In the future, I plan on expanding my knowledge a few different ways. The first way is by taking some additional qualification courses. I am looking to get certified for high school music and for teaching special education. My goal is to help all students to discover their musical identity. I want to be able to reach students who are in special education programs who may not be able to participate in a typical music class. For example, I would be interested in running a bucket drumming ensemble or Glee club to reach those students who may not be able to play an instrument.
In the meantime, here's what I've done:
Jim Arnold is the owner of Folklore Music and a World Music enthusiast. Through attending the Ontario Music Educators Association conference, I was able to arrange this workshop for students at the University of Ottawa. As you can see, Jim has many instruments from around the world and he explained that in school visits, he would bring those instruments with him and allow the students to explore the instruments themselves. In this workshop, we also discussed some practical ideas for implementing World music in the classroom for grade K-8.
